RE: COVID-19 Update - Lutheran High School
FROM: Mr. D. Crites
As a result of the COVID - 19 pandemic and the strong recommendations from our Governor, the Honorable Gavin Newsom, the decision has been made to suspend all on campus educational activities for the balance of the 2019-2020 school year. This is the right and responsible action to take and after consultation with our Board of Directors the decision was affirmed. Lutheran High School will continue to service our students through TrojanOnline for the remainder of the school year. This decision and subsequent action should not come as a surprise considering all of the public school districts surrounding Lutheran High School have been issued the same directive by their respective authorities. Not a surprise but still a shock.
After reading numerous letters from surrounding school districts in the public sector released today I quickly lifted up a prayer of thanks for Lutheran High School and all those connected to us. Our students, families, faculty and administrative team are exceptional. What a blessing it is to be two weeks into our TrojanOnline program when, sadly, so many other schools are still in various stages of the planning process with regards to educating the students in their care. Please pray for all educational institutions across our great nation and the students they serve.
Where do we go from here? Simple answer...FORWARD.
There are still some unknowns, specifically as it relates to the end of the year activities for our Seniors. The Class of 2020. I want to be very clear with our plan forward. During my discussion with our Board of Directors the decision was not made to cancel all activities as it relates to events such as prom, baccalaureate service and of course, commencement. We are taking a wait and see posture and are not officially canceling these events at this time. My hope and prayer is that we will be able to hold these events to honor our very deserving Seniors. Going forward with these events is all dependent upon guidelines issued from our state's governing authorities. Lutheran High School will abide by all directives given.
Here is what is certain. The Class of 2020 will be provided the opportunity to successfully navigate the remainder of the school year utilizing TrojanOnline, earn the required academic credits and receive a diploma at the end of May 2020. The underclassmen will be provided the opportunity to advance grade levels utilizing TrojanOnline and will not be required to attend any summer school instruction or other remediation activities. Our faculty will continue to work diligently from the safety of their homes to provide "meaningful ministry and a quality education" to all of our students.
I want to share a brief story that I was made aware of today which, I believe, captures the spirit of our school. Our Academic Counselor, Ms. MacPherson, is meeting with each grade level on Google Hangout during the academic lab periods. Today she met with our Juniors. The Class of 2021. These meetings are held for the purpose of checking in on the students, providing information on the upcoming academic year, and giving the class a chance to just get together. Here's the great part. The Class of 2021, in spite of all of the challenges they could of aired out in the meeting, expressed deep concern for their friends and fellow students in the Class of 2020. They were concerned, not for themselves, but for our Seniors. I take great encouragement from that and I hope you all do as well. That sums up our school. Love of neighbor and a spirit of genuine concern for each other. Thanks be to God!
As we move forward please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns. We will continue to serve our students to the best of our ability. Thank you again for all of the notes and calls providing encouragement. They mean a lot in times like these. We move forward in God's grace and "run the race set before us." We know how it will end. God wins!
May God's peace, which passes all human understanding, be with you all during this time.
